How to Use the Training Program
The program is accompanied with a Workbook/Facilitator Manual which outlines each chapter in detail and then gives the facilitator a series of questions and activities to follow each session up with. Though Dan suggests that each Session be shown to a group (large or small) for discussion and assimilation; these Sessions will also work well when viewed by one person at a time. You can have the warmth, wit and wisdom of Dan Baker, showing your people how to build a new strength into your company for only a fraction of what it would take to have him in person. You can use it and re-use it for years to come, because the material he brings will not get dated or old. The tried and true realities of the trucking business will continue on for years to come.

About the Program in Brief

This program consists of six sessions:

Session One: Introduction
Introduces Dan, introduces the series and deals with the current issue of the new Generation X/Y people entering the traditionally work-ethic environment of the trucking industry. Deals with what that is doing to the industry and some of the changes we must make to accommodate this migration.

  • About the Presenter, Dan Baker
  • Current change dynamics
  • New generations in an old industry

Session Two: Trucking 101
Deals with the basis of trucking. Dan lays out the priorities of the Customer, the Company and the Driver and how those conflicting priorities cause all kinds of trouble that we need to understand and deal with people-wise.

  • An introduction to the basics of trucking
  • The Customer, The Company, The Driver
  • The two Environments
  • The single basic Priority

Session Three: The World Of The Driver
Here, Dan shows how the driver’s world affects the way the driver sees us, sees himself and sees his work. He deals with how little things turn into big things, how drivers don’t leave companies, drivers leave people. How drivers need some one-on-one time; how they don’t hear what you say, they remember how you made them feel. This is a world we must understand if we are to effectively deal with drivers.

  • His essential environment
  • The Escalation Process
  • Hearing vs. Seeing
  • The Caring Factor
  • The Feeling Factor

Session Four: The Law Of Perception
This explores the idea that “I don’t deal with you in terms of what you’re really like. I deal with you in terms of how I perceive you to be.” In this session, Dan deals with the fact that if you don’t manage how others perceive you, they will. He deals with how to make a good first impression, realizing that we teach other people how to treat us. And he looks at the personal side of perception: other people will respond to you in terms of how they perceive you perceive them.

  • Who perceives who?
  • First impressions
  • Teaching others how to treat us
  • Managing the response of others
  • The Trust and Respect Factor

Session Five: The Corridor Of Entry
The Corridor Of Entry – This section deals with the various standard processes a driver goes through as he or she enters the company, and how each of those processes changes the driver’s perceptions. Dan talks about what we can do to tweak each of those processes so it looks like we’re all singing out of the same hymnal.

  • The Doors: Advertising, Recruiting, Processing, Orientation, Driver Trainer, Dispatcher.
  • Each Door a different perception
  • Re-looking at Orientation
  • The Dispatcher/Driver Relationship

Session Six: Company Culture
This is a huge challenge today with the newer generations entering our workplace. Dan deals with the four basics of a successful company culture: Family, Fairness, Fun, and Focus. He wraps up the series with his old trucker poem: Daddy’s Just A Trucker.

  • The Culture Issue
  • Family – Fair – Fun – Focused
  • Dan’s Poem: Daddy’s Just A Trucker
  • Conclusion
